nothing - Initial responses

nothing #2 - mixed media panel

"...Hatch opens
    Stark light
    and Nothing
    Nothing
    see Nothing..."

4:48 Psychosis a play by Sarah Kane published (after her death)in 2000 by Methuen

Kane's writing has been a key influence in my recent mixed work. Her compelling lyrical and poetic voice is striking in the way that it has the power to provoke the reader/viewer. The play's rawness is an emotional response I am interested in.

Currently I am exploring the rawness of materials and the rawness of emotions to create experimental pieces concerned with the theme Nothing.

This mixed media panel confronts the notion of darkness and containment (an allegory for depression perhaps) with the paradox of  light. The stark light in the reflective material shows a shadow of a hand reaching out. This is echoed in the shadowy forms falling across the incidental plaster surface. The rough assembled materials have limited value in cost (actually nothing) but the value becomes something in the conveyed narrative. Literally making something out of nothing.
